D POLO THE OPEN CUP . Won by the 17 / 21st Lancers . The two ties in the Qpen Cup were played off in the first round on the 14th and 21st inst . the 12th Lancers drew a bye , the 17 / 21st Lan cers being opposed by the Pilgrims - a combina tion which consisted of Mr. Hobson ( 12th Lan cers ) , Mr. J. Chaytor ( 14 / 20th Hussars ) , and Capt . Radford and Mr. Brackenbury ( R.A. ) . The 17 / 21st Lancers , primarily owing to an in jury which prevented Mr. Smith - Bingham from taking the field , brought in Mr. Midwood , re arranged their places , and lined up as follows : Capt . Walford ( back ) , Capt . Cooke ( 3 ) , Mr. Midwood ( 2 ) , and Mr. N. Dugdale ( 1 ) . This combination against the Pilgrims was not very convineing . The 17 / 21st won by 7 goals to 4 , but the Pilgrims - a scratch team for whom Mr. Chaytor played a very fine game - made , the 17 / 21st Lancers go all out , and it was only in the last chukker that they got enough in front to be sure of victory .. In the final match the 17 / 21st substituted Mr. Hamilton - Russell at No. 2 in place of Mr. Mid wood and beat the 12th Lancers , after an extra period being necessary , by 7 goals to 6. The following is a brief description of the match . At the end of the first chukker the 17 / 21st led by one goal to nil . The second chukker , which was very fast , and all in favour of the 12th Lan cers , resulted in their scoring three times to their opponents ' once . The third chukker , which was up and down the field the whole time , added nothing to the score . The fourth chukker was 1 a remarkable one , no fewer than five goals being scored , three for the 12th Lancers ( one from a free hit ) and two for the 17 / 21st , the scores at the end of this period reading : 12th Lancers , 6 goals ; 17 / 21st Lancers , 4 goals . As it turned out , the 12th Lancers did not score again . The fifth chukker was very fast and even both sides had opportunities , but the 17 / 21st , with the aid of Capt . Walford , were successful and added a goal . Exactly the same thing happened in a very exciting sixth chukker and the teams were level . In the first minute of the extra period the 17 / 21st Lancers broke away and Capt . Cooke getting an opening made no mistake with his shot and scored the winning goal . The match was a desperately hard struggle and anyone's game from start to finish . It was played under very adverse climatic conditions - a very close day and a hot southerly wind which was very trying to the players and ponies . The new combination of the 17 / 21st Lancers was very successful , chiefly owing to the bril liant display given by Capt . Walford at back . Both he and Capt . Cooke were very sound in defence , while keeping their forwards always well supplied . For the 12th Lancers , Mr. Hors brough - Porter played a very good game at back , while Mr. Arkwright did a tremendous amount of work at 3 , but they did not appear to combine as a team as well as they did in the Inter Regimental Tournament - and some of their ponies were very tired during the latter part of the game . This competition for a cup presented by Count Nakko - four chukkers handicap , open to any team whose total handicap does not exceed 4 attracted an entry of eight teams . The 12th Lan cers team , playing off scratch , reached the final . having disposed of the R.H.A. " B " ( rec . 1¹ ) by team 14 goals to 3 in the first round and the Dragon flies ( scr . ) by 9 goals to 4 in the semi - final round , while the 14 / 20th Hussars " A " reached the same exalted position by defeating the 2nd Lt. Bde . R.A. ( rec . 2 ) and the Con scripts ( rec . 1 ) by not quite such large margins as their brother finalists . In the final , played on Friday last , the 14 / 20th Hussars " A " team were unfortunate in not being able to play their No. 1 , Mr. J. Dennistoun , through accident , although his deputy , Mr. Scott , played up to his usual standard . It was obvious from the first few minutes play which side was going to triumph , the 12th Lancers being far better mounted than their opponents , and it came as no surprise when Mr. Savill and Mr. K.C. Smith scored quick goals . In the second chukker matters were much the same , being all in favour of the 12th , and by the end of this chukker the score was 5-0 in their favour , the scorers being Mr. Savill , Mr. Palmer , and Mr. Smith , in that order . In the third chukker the superiority of the 12th was even more pronounced , the score being brought to 9-0 , quick goals coming from Mr. Holden , Mr. Smith ( 2 ) , and Mr. Holden again . Apart from solo efforts the 14 / 20th were a very subdued side and Mr. Smith and Mr. Savill , of the 12th , were playing exception ally well . In the last chukker the 14 / 20th im proved wonderfully , Capt . Woodhouse and Major Pope having several near things . now The teams in the final were as follows : 12TH LANCERS . - Mr . A.C. Holden , Mr. K.E. Savill , Mr. K.C. Smith , and Mr. R.H. Palraer . 14 / 20TH HUSSARS " A " .- Mr . G.L. Scott , Mr. G.B. Walker , Capt . R.A.G. Woodhouse , and Major A.V. Pope . |
