Saturday , 8th July . - Given a beautiful alternoon ; a well laid out course ; soft and bright greensward in the foreground , backed by dark green pine forests in the rear ; together with large fields and a goodly company of spectators , it is not sur prising that a very pleasant evening's racing should have ensued . Although , for a while , there was some anxiety felt for the gallant little rider of " Cameron , " in the second race , happily no more serious consequences ultimately ensued than a considerable shaking from what was no doubt a very nasty fall . His horse , apparently , breasted the wall , throwing his rider on to his head , and dragging him some little distance by the stirrup . He lay insensible until assistance reached him , but eventually walked to the Stand , and was able to view the other races of the evening . Desert made the running for the first half mile , when he gradually came back to his horses . Motee then took up the running , was never head ed , and won a good race by half a length , the same distance between 2nd and 3rd . 4TH RACE.- Tom Thumb Stakes . Hermit looked all over like the winner , till within a dis tance from home ,, when Major Swinton brought up No Never with a rush that would have done credit to George Fordham , and won a magnificent race by a head . A length and a half between second and third . 6TH RACE . - Cashmere Scurry . For all ponies , the property of , and to be ridden by Cashmere natives . 3 Furlongs . A large and unruly field faced the Starter , who , however , got them into line , and started them at the first attempt . Arms , legs , and whips were soon in motion , and they all tried who should be the first to get off the course . However , they soon righted themselves and passed the Judge's box in a confused mass , and it was with difficulty the first three were spotted . UMBALLA GYMKHANA . The [ From a Correspondent . ] August 3 , 1882 . The 1st Gymkhana of the season took place on Thursday afternoon the 3rd . Notwithstanding the heat , there was a good attendance , and it was a cheering sight to lovers of the turf to see the Race Stand again occupied after the long and weary hot weather . We were glad to see our worthy General , who has been away , looking so well and cheery . He always makes a point of supporting these pleasant little meetings . fields were very fair , considering they depended solely on the 9th Lancers and a small number of R. H. A. here , for support . It is a pity that other horses and ponies are not produced on these oc casions , as there must be many belonging to the three other regiments , and the departments also . Surely some civilians must have horses or ponies , that , although not good enough to run with race horses or ponies , are good enough to enter for these Gymkhanas which are got up for the benefit of every one who possesses a horse or pony " of sorts . " No really good horse , or pony , is allowed to run , winners of any previous race being barred . There were lotteries , but owners seemed as a rule to be shy of backing their stables . 1st Race . - The Monsoon Stakes , Value , Rs . 25 . For all maiden C. After a delay of over half an hour at the post , owing to some of the riders be ing late at the scales , the lot were despatched to a good start . Ruby 7 to 1. Khedive , Sickle , and Faith at very outside prices . After one false start , in which Ruby and Khedive got well away , the flag fell to a moderate one . Ruby ran well , but for a very short distance , and was out of it before the mile was reached . At the turn Khedive , who had got a bad start , came outside his horses , and by the time the mile post was reached , had got on level terms with the leader Faith , who was on the inside ; he soon assumed the lead , which he maintained and won comfortably by 2 lengths , Sickle being 2nd and Faith 3rd . The Devil ran a very good horse , considering the weight he had to carry , his sport ing owner having elected to ride himself , and con sequently had to declare 1st . 12lbs . overweight . The winner was despised at the lotteries by every one except his sporting owner , and his trainer who fortunately secured the whole lottery at a very small price . Time 1m . 34 s . Sunny Boy , utterly despised even by his owner , fell to the first bid , viz . , 2 Rs . The four little chasers were let go to a good start at the first attempt , and ran well to gether to the 2nd fence , when it was seen that Jack was out of it , and unable to keep on galloping and jnmping at the pace he commenced with , and from that point he gradually died away , and it was a pretty race home between the other three : but after the last fence , before coming into the flat course , The Baste was beat , and on coming over the flight of hurdles , Sunny Boy had it all his own way and won easily , excellently ridden by Mr. Bishop , Jerusalem second , whose owner carried 1st 2lbs . over weight . The same " Pacha's ' face was worthlooking at when the clerk of the scales pronounced the welcome word " weight , " and on referring to his betting book found that he had secured the whole lottery at the small investment of Rs . 4. The time was indifferent owing to the heavy going , the grass being very thick and the better weights . sporting way in which the owner of The Devil , and Jerusalem got up and rode notwithstanding the The crushing weights he thereby put up , ought to be an example and encouragement to those backward in entering ponies for these Gymkhana's , which are got up purely for sport and not for making money .
